The future of education isn’t just reading textbooks and memorizing facts – it’s about real-world experiences! Successful students are solving real world problems, using project-based learning, and applying their knowledge long before entering the job market. As educators, we need to continue creating engaging lessons that will help prepare our students for their careers. When learning is accessible and purposeful, success isn’t limited by background or resources — it’s driven by opportunity and passion.

Student Growth and Success

I have been teaching animation through YaizY for two years, and I have seen first-hand how students can grow and thrive–even over a short period of time. It’s important to recognize that small wins are essential, especially for younger students. Celebrating these milestones builds momentum and excitement. A student’s first animation can be their first win. For many, creating even a short, simple animation is a huge accomplishment that builds confidence and motivation. Highlighting this success and praising the students for their work can foster a positive environment of learning and a desire to improve.

One powerful example of student success and growth comes from a motivated middle schooler I taught for two semesters. She made tremendous strides in both skill and creativity. The GIF on the left shows her very first animation in my class; the one on the right is the final project she completed.

Her progress is clear: She developed a more detailed and expressive character design and successfully incorporated sound into her animation. She followed a professional workflow — conducting research, creating a storyboard, and implementing sound design. These are the same skills used by professionals in the animation industry, and she gained this experience in middle school!

Another student who showed remarkable improvement was initially unsure of her animation abilities but eager to learn. Using accessible tools like Brush Ninja, she was able to see quick results that boosted her confidence. The GIF on the left was her first animation in my class, and the one on the right was created near the end of the course.

The GIFs comparing her early and final work show incredible growth—her characters gained detail and shading, and her animations became smoother and more refined. Like many of my students, she was amazed at her own progress by the end of the course. That transformation reinforces a key lesson: with effort and support, anyone can improve.

Equal Access and Opportunity

A critical component of student success is equitable access. At YaizY, we use free, web-based tools to create our animations. This breaks the barriers that can exist between students that may not have access to expensive software. By using free platforms like Brush Ninja and CloudStopMotion, our students can work on developing their skills in and out of the classroom–without worrying about costs. This confidence leads to curiosity: When students succeed early, they become curious and excited — some pursue animation as a career, while others enjoy it as a creative outlet. Either way, they’re empowered.

This same philosophy of access and real-world relevance extends to other courses and careers. In another course I teach at YaizY, Changemakers — an introductory marketing class — students use free tools like Canva to design professional-quality content. Many students are amazed at what they can create with such an intuitive platform, and their excitement grows as they realize these skills are immediately applicable. Several of my students have gone on to earn the Canva Essentials certification, a credential that strengthens their resumes and opens doors for future opportunities.

It’s another powerful example of how accessible tools and industry-aligned learning can turn classroom experiences into real-world success for every student, even if they have limited access to expensive software.

Project-based Learning

Our role as educators is to ensure that students are prepared for real careers. Project-based learning (PBL) is key to that preparation. At YaizY, we emphasize projects and hands-on experience. One such project requires students to create a storyboard before assembling their final animation. This mirrors real-world processes in the animation industry. During the lesson, we discuss the importance of storyboarding, and how it can help professionals develop the story they are creating. The students then get to create their own storyboard, applying the knowledge in a tangible way.

This storyboard project gives students the opportunity to try completing a project that would be necessary in the animation industry. This hands-on approach is vital for our students that may want to pursue a career in the animation industry. Another example of PBL is our module on the 12 Principles of Animation. After learning each principle, students apply their knowledge by creating an animation that demonstrates it in action. These projects help students engage deeply with the material and understand the concepts on a professional level. It’s not just about theory — it’s about doing.

In an introductory business course I teach, students engage in project-based learning to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges. One key project involves identifying a problem that people genuinely face and brainstorming potential solutions. From there, students develop product or service ideas that could evolve into viable startups.

This hands-on experience teaches them how to think critically and creatively — while also helping them avoid common pitfalls, like creating a solution in search of a problem. It’s a practical, thoughtful approach that mirrors the kind of innovation and problem-solving required in today’s business world.

Conclusion

When students are given real-world tools, hands-on experiences, and the opportunity to grow in a supportive environment, their success becomes more than academic — it becomes transformational. Through animation classes at YaizY, students aren’t just learning technical skills; they’re building confidence, creativity, and a professional mindset. These are the same qualities that will carry them into internships, certifications, and careers in the creative industry and beyond. As educators, our greatest achievement is watching students realize their potential and take their first steps toward a future they once only imagined. When we invest in purposeful, industry-aligned learning, we empower students not just to succeed in class — but to thrive in the real world.
