Depth Over Breadth: Why the Strongest CTE Pathways Go Deep

Spend enough time around career and technical education and you start to notice a quiet shift in how the best programs think about growth. The instinct is usually to add: another pathway, another intro course, another option on the menu. But a lot of the directors I talk with have landed somewhere different. The programs they’re proudest of aren’t the ones with the most offerings. They’re the ones where students go deep enough to finish something.

That’s not just a hunch. It’s where the research has been pointing for years, and it’s worth sitting with before the next budget cycle tempts everyone to spread thin again.

What the research actually says

The clearest finding comes from economists Daniel Kreisman and Kevin Stange, whose study is literally titled The Value of Depth Over Breadth. Using national transcript and earnings data, they found that each additional year of upper-level vocational coursework was associated with a wage premium of roughly two percent. Introductory courses, taken on their own, showed no such gain.[1]

Read that twice, because the implication is sharper than it first sounds. The payoff isn’t in exposure. It’s in sequence. A student who samples six different intro classes looks busy on paper but leaves with little the labor market rewards. A student who moves through a coherent sequence in one field leaves with something employers recognize.

Other large datasets tell a similar story. Work using statewide records from Arkansas found that CTE concentrators - students who complete a focused, aligned sequence, graduated at higher rates and saw better postsecondary and earnings outcomes than peers who didn’t concentrate.[2] The pattern holds across states and methods: depth is doing the work, not the number of doors a student walks through.

Exposure still matters — just earlier

None of this means exploration is wasted. It means exploration has a job, and that job belongs in the middle grades. The point of early exposure is to help a student figure out where to commit, so the high school years can be spent going deep rather than starting over.

This is also where a small but important detail trips up a lot of older program materials. The career clusters most of us grew up referencing have changed. In 2024, after a two-year process involving thousands of CTE professionals, Advance CTE released a modernized framework: it now organizes the world of work into 14 clusters and 72 sub-clusters, not the 16 clusters many of us still cite from memory.[3] If your exploration model still maps to the old sixteen, that’s a quick and worthwhile thing to refresh.

The sequence that tends to work: let students sample broadly while the stakes are low, then narrow. Once a student finds the thing that pulls them in, the program’s job is to give them somewhere deeper to go - labs, work-based learning, a real next course, rather than another introduction.

Strengthen what you already have

Here’s the part that’s easy to say and hard to do: the highest-leverage move is often not a new program at all. It’s making the existing ones deeper and more complete. A few principles that show up consistently in strong programs:

  • Align to real industry demand. Build pathways around the jobs that actually exist in your region, with employer and state agency input shaping the sequence.

  • Let data tell you who’s finishing. Look not just at who enrolls but at who concentrates and completes — and where students fall out of a sequence.[4]

  • Keep it rigorous and applied. The strongest pathways pair real academic standards with hands-on, project-based work. Depth without rigor isn’t depth.

  • Build for completion. Design so that finishing a sequence is the default path a student is on, not the exception that requires heroics.[5]

Four ways to go deeper with your team

  1. Pick your bets. Concentrate curriculum, equipment, and certification dollars on one or two high-demand pathways rather than thinning them across many.

  2. Sequence it. Build multi-year pathways that climb from foundational skills to advanced coursework and a credential that means something.[6]

  3. Explore early, commit on time. Use the middle grades for discovery, then help each student choose a lane and give them a deeper place to take it.

  4. Watch the right numbers. Track concentration, credentials, and completion not just headcount and let what you learn reshape the program.

The takeaway

The case for depth isn’t a knock on ambition. It’s a more honest read of where ambition pays off. A program that helps a hundred students finish one strong pathway is doing more for them than a catalog that lets a thousand sample and move on. The evidence has been telling us this for a while. The harder, more interesting question is what it would take in your district to help more students cross the finish line rather than the starting one.
